A company has been fined Rs. 200,000 by the Colombo No. 5 Magistrate’s Court for selling an expired packet of tea to a consumer.
The company pleaded guilty when the case, filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), was taken up before court.
A CAA investigation found that a 400g packet of tea marked as having expired on July 15, 2026, had been sold for Rs. 1,000.
Legal action was taken for violating Direction No. 52 published in Extraordinary Gazette No. 1875/38 dated Aug. 15, 2014.
The direction prohibits manufacturers, importers, distributors, suppliers and traders from storing or displaying goods identified as unsuitable for sale, expired or unfit for human consumption together with other goods offered for sale. (Newswire)
