Sri Lanka Police have launched an internal investigation after identifying shortcomings and omissions in the ongoing probe into illegal drugs allegedly concealed in two containers imported from Pakistan.
Police said the two containers had been transported to Sri Lanka from Pakistan and were being stored at the CICT Terminal of the Colombo Port. An investigation is already underway into the alleged drug consignment.
Following the identification of shortcomings and omissions related to the investigation, Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya has instructed the Police Special Investigation Unit to conduct a separate internal investigation into the matter.
Police stressed that the internal investigation would not impede or interfere with the ongoing investigation into the two containers and the alleged illegal drug consignment.
The main investigation into the seized containers is being conducted by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau, with Police saying the probe is being carried out transparently and in accordance with due procedure. (Newswire)
