A restaurant in Valaichchenai has been fined Rs. 750,000 by the Valaichchenai Magistrate’s Court for selling bottled drinking water above the maximum retail price set by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).
The case was filed by Batticaloa District Investigation Officers of the CAA against Amirtham Restaurant following a raid conducted on June 4, 2026.
During the inspection, officers found that a one-litre bottle of drinking water carrying a maximum retail price of Rs. 100 was being sold for Rs. 130.
When the case was taken up on Thursday (10), the defendant establishment pleaded guilty and the Magistrate’s Court imposed a Rs. 750,000 fine. (Newswire)
