National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa said his party has decided to participate in the rally organised by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on Sept. 12, describing it as a step towards building broader opposition unity around a national agenda.
Weerawansa said the NFF Political Council had decided to accept the SLPP’s invitation and extend its support to the rally.
He said the public voted the current government into power under exceptional circumstances, when Sri Lanka was emerging from a severe economic crisis and there were strong expectations that those responsible for corruption would be held accountable.
However, Weerawansa accused the government of turning its back on those expectations, claiming that an administration elected promising to catch thieves had itself fallen into corruption.
He also criticised the government over seven agreements signed with India, including agreements related to defence, claiming their contents had still not been made public and raising concerns over the country’s sovereignty.
Weerawansa said the NFF’s participation in the Sept. 12 rally was not about individual personalities or political parties, but an initial step towards creating a broader political alliance based on a national agenda.
He said such unity was necessary to challenge what he described as the government’s “dangerous authoritarian” direction. (Newswire)
