Rani de Silva, mother of Sri Lankan cricket legend Aravinda de Silva, has passed away.
A much-loved and influential figure in Aravinda’s life, Rani de Silva was regarded as one of the main pillars behind his journey, providing unwavering support throughout his rise from a young cricketer to one of Sri Lanka’s greatest sporting icons.
Behind Aravinda’s celebrated career was a close-knit family that supported him through the demands and pressures of international cricket, with his mother remaining a constant source of strength and encouragement.
Aravinda de Silva is widely regarded as one of the finest batters produced by Sri Lanka and played a defining role in the country’s historic 1996 Cricket World Cup triumph. He scored an unbeaten 107 in the final against Australia and was named Player of the Match.
He represented Sri Lanka in 93 Tests and 308 One-Day Internationals during an international career spanning nearly two decades.
Rani de Silva’s passing will be deeply felt by her family and those close to the former Sri Lanka captain.
