Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has called for a public parking plan to address traffic congestion in Nugegoda, following discussions at the Colombo District Development Committee meeting held on Tuesday (15).
The meeting focused on traffic congestion in Nugegoda, particularly the lack of parking facilities and the impact of private tuition centres operating in residential areas.
During the discussion, an official pointed out that roads were intended for vehicle movement but were increasingly being used for parking and commercial activities.
The official suggested that constructing multistory parking facilities, potentially with 10 to 12 floors, could help reduce congestion in busy areas.
Responding to the proposal, Prime Minister Amarasuriya asked whether a public parking plan could be developed to address the problem.
Concerns were also raised over private tuition centres operating in Nugegoda, where large numbers of students and vehicles contribute to congestion on narrow residential roads.
It was proposed that parking availability should be considered when granting approval for such educational establishments.
The discussion also highlighted similar parking problems near schools in Colombo, including Royal College and Ladies’ College.
No final decision on constructing new parking facilities was announced during the discussion. (Newswire)
