Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama has directed the Inspector General of Police to investigate whether a statement made by former minister Wimal Weerawansa amounted to contempt of court.
The order was issued after the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption requested an investigation into remarks made by Weerawansa at a rally in Anuradhapura on Sept. 12.
The request was made when the case against Member of Parliament (MP) Namal Rajapaksa relating to the Airbus matter was taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara submitted a compact disc containing footage of Weerawansa’s remarks to the court and requested that the matter be examined.
After considering the submissions, the chief magistrate directed the IGP to conduct an investigation and submit a report to court on whether the statement amounted to contempt. (Newswire)
