Construction of the new Mahaiyawa underpass in Kandy has reached around 80% physical progress, with authorities aiming to complete the project before December, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena said.
The final-stage construction work was inspected on Sunday (20), with project officials and engineers discussing measures to expedite the remaining work.
The underpass is being constructed between the 2+064 km and 2+097 km points of the Kandy–Jaffna main road. It is 31.7 metres long, 21 metres wide and 6.15 metres high.
The project is estimated to cost around Rs. 650 million.
The underpass is intended to help ease traffic congestion in Kandy and improve access for commuters entering the city, while facilitating smoother movement for vehicles travelling towards destinations including Wattegama, Matale, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Jaffna. (Newswire)
