The Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) has launched an investigation into whether former Minister Wimal Weerawansa committed contempt of court through remarks made at an SLPP rally in Anuradhapura on September 12.
Police said the investigation was initiated on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), following a directive issued by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
The court order came when a complaint involving MP Namal Rajapaksa in connection with the Airbus issue was taken up.
Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara, appearing for the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), requested an investigation into whether Weerawansa’s remarks amounted to contempt of court.
Bandara also submitted a compact disc containing the relevant speech to court.
After considering the request, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama directed the IGP to investigate the matter and submit a report.
The investigation will determine whether Weerawansa’s statements constitute contempt of court. (Newswire)
