Twenty-five Indonesian fishermen have been safely brought to the Colombo Port following a multi-agency rescue operation after their fishing trawler capsized south of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Navy said.
According to a Navy statement, the fishermen were aboard the Indonesian fishing trawler KM Garuda Jaya VI, which capsized on September 22.
The incident occurred within the Australian Search and Rescue Region, where the crew members were initially reported to be in distress.
The merchant vessel MV Moonstone subsequently rescued all 25 survivors from the water and alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Colombo.
Responding to the distress call, the Sri Lanka Navy, through coordination with MRCC Colombo, dispatched two naval craft to bring the rescued fishermen ashore.
The Navy safely transferred the 25 survivors to the Colombo Port last evening (24) and provided them with humanitarian assistance.
The fishermen were subsequently handed over to the Indonesian Embassy in Sri Lanka for further action. (Newswire)
