Regular train services between Colombo Fort and Peradeniya/Gampola will resume from the evening of October 2, 2026, following the completion of reconstruction work on the railway line damaged by Cyclone ‘Ditwah’.

The Railway Department said the railway line between Rambukkana and Gampola was damaged at 103 locations, including 36 large-scale landslides and 67 railway line washouts and rockfalls.

The restoration work was carried out by the Roads and Industries Sub-Department of the Railway Department in collaboration with the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO).

The department said the work was completed despite challenges posed by the gradient of the Rambukkana-Kadugannawa section, lack of alternative access routes, adverse weather conditions, and the need to transport machinery and raw materials by train.

The regular train schedule between Colombo Fort and Peradeniya/Gampola will be in effect from the evening of October 2. (Newswire)
