Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has been further remanded until October 13 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to the controversial SriLankan Airlines Airbus aircraft procurement.
Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, was brought before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today (29) as a suspect in the investigation being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
According to reports, Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara had informed court that the investigations into bribery and money laundering allegations have concluded and that a combined indictment is to be filed in this regard.
The latest remand order of Namal Rajapaksa extends his custody in the money laundering proceedings after he was previously ordered to remain in remand until September 29.
The investigation centres on alleged financial irregularities involving approximately US$2 million in connection with the procurement of Airbus aircraft by SriLankan Airlines.
Rajapaksa was recently named as a suspect in the money laundering case following instructions from the Attorney General after investigators submitted material relating to the aircraft procurement deal.
The case relates to the controversial 2013 procurement of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines and alleged irregularities surrounding financial transactions connected to the deal. (Newswire)
