Sri Lanka batter Nuwanidu Fernando was left stunned by a controversial caught-behind decision during the Asian Games bronze medal cricket match against Bangladesh.

The incident occurred with Sri Lanka struggling at 18 for three when Fernando attempted to play a delivery through the off side but appeared to miss the ball.

Bangladesh appealed for a catch behind, and Indian umpire Nitin Menon raised his finger, prompting a visibly surprised Fernando to remain at the crease and stare at the umpire before eventually walking off.

Television replays appeared to show a clear gap between Fernando’s bat and the ball.

With the Decision Review System (DRS) not available for the match, Fernando had no opportunity to challenge the decision.

Despite the early setback, Sri Lanka recovered through Tharindu Ratnayake, who struck 65 off 32 balls, while captain Sahan Arachchige contributed 33 as Sri Lanka reached 165 for nine.

Sri Lanka then dismissed Bangladesh for 102 to secure a 63-run victory and the bronze medal.

Ratnayake also claimed two wickets for 18 runs to complete an impressive all-round performance.

The controversial decision involving Fernando attracted attention on social media following the match, with footage of the dismissal widely shared. (Newswire)
