A protest was held in London over the recent removal of a temporary statue of Thileepan from the Thileepan Memorial Square in Nallur, Jaffna.

The demonstration, organised by the UK-based Movement for Self-Determination of Tamil Eelam (MSDTE), began near 10 Downing Street and proceeded towards the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

The temporary statue had been erected at the memorial site during commemorations marking the death anniversary of Thileepan and was subsequently removed by Police on September 27.

The removal prompted protests in Nallur, while members of the public continued to visit the memorial site to pay tribute.

Organisers said the London demonstration was held to protest the removal and draw the British Government’s attention to the issue. (Newswire)
