Steps can be taken to recruit Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) graduates to the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service immediately after the proposed amendments to the Teachers’ Service Minute are completed, Prime Minister and Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya has said.

The Prime Minister made the remarks during a discussion with representatives of teacher and principal trade unions on the proposed amendments aimed at resolving issues surrounding the recruitment of B.Ed. graduates.

The meeting was held on October 02 at the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education at Isurupaya.

The proposed amendments are to be formulated taking into account guidelines issued by the Public Service Commission and relevant rulings of the Supreme Court.

During the meeting, the proposed changes and the process of implementing them were discussed at length with representatives of teacher and principal trade unions.

The Prime Minister said recruitment of the affected graduates could proceed once the necessary amendments to the Teachers’ Service Minute are completed.

She also briefed the representatives on government measures to establish an Education Professionals Council aimed at strengthening teacher training, developing Colleges of Education and improving the professional standards of six education-sector services, including the teacher and principal services.

Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Madhura Seneviratne, teacher and principal trade union representatives and ministry officials participated in the discussion. (Newswire)
