The Department of Meteorology’s Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an Amber Warm Weather Advisory for several regions across the country, warning that the heat index is likely to rise to the ‘Caution level’ during the daytime on October 07.

The advisory applies to the Northern, North-Central, Eastern and North-Western provinces, as well as the Monaragala and Hambantota districts, where residents are urged to take necessary precautions against the rising heat felt on the human body.

The Heat Index Forecast indicates that conditions in these regions will reach between 39°C and 45°C. At this caution level, prolonged exposure and physical activity can cause fatigue, while continued exertion increases the risk of heat cramps.

In light of these conditions, authorities have outlined essential measures prepared under the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services to ensure public safety. Outdoors and at job sites, individuals are strongly advised to limit strenuous activities, seek shade frequently, stay well hydrated and wear lightweight, light coloured clothing.

Indoors care should be taken to check on the elderly and the sick, while adults are strictly warned never to leave children unattended in vehicles. Members of the public are also urged to consult further advisories from the Disaster Preparedness and Response Division of the Ministry of Health. (Newswire)
