Nine individuals have been convicted over the assault of two police officers in Nilaveli, after a video of the incident recently began circulating on social media.

The incident occurred on March 31, 2025, within the Nilaveli Police Division, according to a report submitted by the Trincomalee Division.

Police said the two officers were engaged in traffic duties when they took into custody a motorcycle that was being ridden on the road while emitting excessive noise.

As the officers were taking the motorcycle to the police station, a group of individuals allegedly obstructed them from carrying out their duties.

The group, allegedly acting as members of an unlawful assembly and using criminal force, assaulted the two officers and caused them injuries.

The officers were also unlawfully restrained during the incident, while property and parts of their police uniforms were damaged.

Following an immediate investigation led by the Officer-in-Charge of the Nilaveli Police Station, nine suspects allegedly involved in the incident were arrested.

Police also seized a three-wheeler allegedly used by the suspects to travel to the location where the officers were assaulted.

Charges were subsequently filed against the nine suspects before the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court.

The suspects were later convicted by the court, which also ordered them to pay fines and compensation.

Police clarified the circumstances surrounding the incident after footage showing the assault on the two uniformed officers began circulating on social media. (Newswire)
