Weligama shooting: Indictments served on Deshabandu Tennakoon and 8 others

Indictments were served today (07) before the Matara High Court on former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon and eight other police officers in connection with the shooting incident at a hotel in Weligama in December 2023.

The indictments filed by the Attorney General were read out to the nine accused when the case was taken up before Matara High Court Judge Nandana Amarasinghe.

Following the serving of indictments, the High Court ordered that all nine accused be released on bail.

The case relates to an operation carried out in Weligama in late December 2023 by a team of eight police officers attached to the Colombo Crime Division (CCD).

During the incident, a Police Sergeant who was part of the CCD team, was killed after being shot by officers attached to the Weligama Police.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been conducting investigations into the incident.

The case is scheduled to be taken up again on November 27. (Newswire)
