Vehicle usage at the Makumbura Park and Ride facility increased by 54.97% in the third quarter of 2026 compared with the first quarter, Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena said in a social media post.

The total number of vehicles using the facility rose from 34,284 in the first quarter to 53,129 in the third quarter, according to figures shared by the deputy minister.

The daily average also increased from 380 vehicles in the first quarter to 590 in the third quarter.

Gunasena attributed the increase to the Metro Bus service, which began operations on April 21 with 10 buses, alongside the Park and Ride facility.

The initiative allows motorists to park their private vehicles and use public transport for their daily journeys.

The deputy minister said the facility provides private vehicle users with access to public transport that is comfortable, safe and reliable.

He also highlighted cooperation between the public and private sectors as a key element in developing a more efficient and passenger-friendly transport system. (Newswire)
