The Department of Meteorology has warned of increased rainfall across Sri Lanka from Tuesday (October 13), with heavy showers of up to 150 mm expected in several provinces.

According to the weather forecast issued at 4 p.m. on Monday (October 12), a low-pressure area may form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal by October 13.

The department said the developing weather system is expected to increase rainfall across the island and surrounding sea areas over the next few days.

Heavy rainfall between 100 mm and 150 mm is forecast in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Southern provinces on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, rainfall exceeding 75 mm is expected in other parts of the country.

For Monday night, showers or thundershowers are forecast across most parts of the island, with rainfall exceeding 75 mm likely in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Uva and North-Western provinces, as well as the Anuradhapura and Mannar districts.

Misty conditions are also expected in parts of the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours.

The Meteorology Department has urged the public to take precautions against temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Naval and fishing communities have also been advised to closely monitor future weather forecasts and advisories as the low-pressure system develops. (Newswire)
