Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games, saying the country is moving forward with its dream of staging the world’s biggest sporting event.
“While India prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, we are also moving forward with the dream of hosting the 2036 Olympics,” Modi said.
India has been actively pursuing its ambition to host the Olympics for the first time, with Ahmedabad in Gujarat emerging as a potential host city.
The Indian government views hosting the Olympics as part of its broader efforts to strengthen the country’s sporting infrastructure and establish India as a major destination for international sporting events.
Addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya in Chennai on Sunday (Oct. 11), Modi said hosting major international sporting events would create greater opportunities for young Indian athletes.
India is among seven countries currently in discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over hosting the 2036 Games. The other interested countries are Germany, Hungary, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Türkiye.
India’s proposed Olympic hosting plans are centred on Ahmedabad, which is also scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
The IOC is expected to shortlist interested candidates by March 2027, with a final decision on the 2036 Olympic host expected in 2029. (Newswire)
