The Department of Meteorology has warned that a low-pressure area may develop over the southeastern Bay of Bengal today (13), potentially increasing rainfall over the sea areas surrounding Sri Lanka in the coming days.
According to the Met Department, rainfall is expected to increase over both deep and shallow sea areas around the island from today under the influence of the developing weather system.
The Department has urged naval and fishing communities to remain vigilant and closely follow future weather forecasts and bulletins issued regarding the system.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected in the sea areas around the island.
Winds will be northeasterly or variable in direction, with speeds ranging between 20 and 30 kmph.
Sea conditions around the island are generally expected to remain slight to moderate.
However, the Met Department warned that temporarily strong gusty winds reaching 60–70 kmph and very rough seas could occur during thundershowers.
Naval and fishing communities have been advised to remain attentive to changing weather conditions and official advisories over the next few days. (Newswire)
