Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of superstar Aamir Khan, has reportedly been ordered to leave India by October 28 after participating in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to Indian media reports, Mumbai Police issued a Leave India Notice to the actor following his participation in a demonstration near August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on October 10.
Khan, who holds U.S. citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, reportedly faces action over allegations that his participation in the political protest violated regulations governing foreign nationals.
The actor was among hundreds of protesters detained by Mumbai Police during the demonstration. He was later released along with his girlfriend, actress Lekha Washington, and his cousin Zayn Marie Khan.
The protest was organised in support of demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid controversy over India’s electoral processes.
Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Kirit Somaiya subsequently called for Khan’s deportation, alleging that his participation in political activities violated conditions applicable to foreign nationals.
The development has also raised questions over the political rights of OCI cardholders, who are permitted to live and work in India but do not enjoy all the rights granted to Indian citizens.
According to The Indian Express, Khan had earlier said he attended the demonstration as a resident of Mumbai and questioned restrictions imposed on people’s freedom of movement and expression.
There has been no confirmation that Khan has left India, while the actor’s response to the latest notice remains unclear. (Newswire)
