Sri Lanka is considering introducing personalized vehicle registration number plates that would allow motorists to display individual or business names instead of conventional registration numbers.

The proposal was discussed at a recent Parliamentary Ministerial Consultative Committee meeting on Transport, Highways and Urban Development, chaired by Minister Bimal Rathnayake.

According to the proposal, vehicle owners would be able to obtain customized number plates displaying a personal name or business name in place of the standard registration number.

The committee also discussed introducing special vehicle registration numbers to generate additional government revenue while providing motorists with greater choice.

However, officials emphasized that the proposal requires a comprehensive assessment of technical, legal and security implications before implementation.

The discussions form part of broader efforts to modernize Sri Lanka’s vehicle registration system and improve services provided by the Department of Motor Traffic.

No implementation date or proposed fee structure for personalized number plates was announced. (Newswire)
