Opposition MP Harshana Rajakaruna has condemned media reports suggesting a connection between him and an individual arrested with firearms by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD), clarifying that he has no involvement in the incident.

In a statement issued on Sunday (18), the Gampaha District MP said several media outlets, including a social media account belonging to a government-affiliated newspaper organisation, had published reports implying a connection between him and the arrested suspect.

Clarifying the matter, Rajakaruna said he is the only son in a family with three sisters and does not have any brothers.

He questioned whether an offence committed by an individual bearing a particular surname should be attributed to everyone sharing that surname.

The MP further stated that, despite serving in Parliament for 11 years, he had never obtained the firearm provided to MPs. He added that his late father, Sarath Chandra Rajakaruna, had also never possessed a firearm.

Rajakaruna alleged that certain media institutions had deliberately linked his name to an incident with which he had no connection, in an attempt to politically damage his reputation.

He said he had instructed his lawyers to consider legal action against the media institutions responsible for publishing the reports.

The Opposition MP also accused the National People’s Power (NPP) government of engaging in such activities to divert public attention from mounting social pressure and criticism of the government. (Newswire)
