The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to present the Import and Export (Control) Regulations No. 08 of 2026 to Parliament, enforcing mandatory Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) testing compliance for imported passenger car tyres and pneumatic tyres for three-wheelers.

The proposal was submitted by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, based on recommendations from the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development. The new measures aim to establish a fair competitive landscape for domestic tire manufacturers while safeguarding consumer safety and quality assurance.

Enacted via Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2508/27 on October 1, 2026, the updated regulations amend existing standardization protocols. Under the new rules, imported passenger car tyres under HS Code 4011.10.90 must comply with Sri Lanka Standard 1212, while pneumatic tyres for three-wheeled vehicles under HS Code 4011.90.10 must adhere to Sri Lanka Standard 1347.
