The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to implement the “Suraksha” Student Insurance Scheme for the 2026/27 operational year, featuring a significantly expanded array of medical and accidental coverage benefits for students across Sri Lanka.

The agreement between the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education and Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited will run for the period from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2027.

The scheme covers all students enrolled in government schools, government-approved private schools, Pirivenas, and assisted special education schools, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Key amendments and enhanced benefits include:

  • Hearing Aid Repairs: Allowances up to LKR 75,000 for the repair of hearing accessories and related service charges.
  • Chronic Illness Medication: Allowances up to LKR 20,000 for students taking long-term medications for Chronic Kidney Disease and Chronic Inflammatory Arthritis.
  • Expanded Diagnostic Testing: Coverage up to LKR 20,000 for specialized diagnostic screenings, including Skin Cancer, Post-transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder (PTLD), Osteoporosis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV.
  • Cancer and Critical Care Support: Reclassification of critical illness coverage to encompass “Cancer Treatment and related Testing”, as well as covering costs for PET Scans and major neurosurgeries necessitated by emergency accidents.

Student Safety Coverage: An emergency benefit of LKR 100,000 in the event of a tragic accidental death during school-organized activities—such as sports meets or educational trips—whether held on or off school grounds.

The proposal was presented to the Cabinet by the Prime Minister in her capacity as the Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education. (Newswire)
