Sri Lanka Police have clarified that a video circulating on social media showing a woman allegedly threatening two police officers in Gandara relates to an incident that occurred on January 28, 2024.

According to the Police Media Division, the woman was arrested on the same day for allegedly verbally abusing and threatening a police sergeant, as well as threatening and assaulting a female police sergeant, causing injuries.

She also faced charges of reckless driving and failing to keep to the left side of the road.

The suspect was produced before the Kotavila Magistrate’s Court, where her driving licence was suspended. She was subsequently released on personal bail of Rs. 200,000.

Police said the woman pleaded not guilty when the case was taken up on March 26, 2024, and legal proceedings have continued.

However, investigations have since revealed that the accused had travelled overseas without informing the court.

As a result, the trial is proceeding in her absence under Section 192(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, with the proceedings remaining binding on the accused.

The next hearing is scheduled for December 8, 2026.

Police issued the clarification following the renewed circulation of the video on social media. (Newswire)
