The low level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka has developed into a low-pressure area, according to the Department of Meteorology.

As such, under the influence of this system, an enhancement of rainfall is expected over the island and the deep and shallow sea areas around the island today (22).

The public, as well as the naval and fishing communities, are requested to be attentive to the future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

According to the Met Department, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern, North-western and Southern provinces and in the Anuradhapura district and cloudy skies can be expected over these areas today.

Showers or thunder showers will occur after 1.00 p.m. elsewhere on the island. Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island

Winds will be Westerly to South-westerly in direction and Wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 40-50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, Matara and Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, Matara and Hambantota may be fairly rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be slight.

Temporarily strong gusty winds 60-70 kmph and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
