The Department of Irrigation has issued Amber flood warnings for low-lying areas in the Kelani River and Attanagalu Oya basins through 6PM tomorrow (October 27), following heavy rainfall and the opening of spill gates at the Basnagoda Reservoir.

According to official advisories signed by Irrigation Director (Hydrology & Disaster Management) Eng. L.S. Sooriyabandara, rising water levels in the Attanagalu Oya have been further accelerated by the opening of spill gates at the Basnagoda Reservoir.

The resulting flood risk threatens low-lying regions across nine Divisional Secretariat divisions, including Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela, Katana and Wattala.

Simultaneously, a 24-hour flood warning has been placed over low-lying areas along the Kelani River Valley, affecting Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Dehiowita, Eheliyagoda, Yatiyantota and Bulathkohupitiya.

Officials warned that should torrential rains persist, flooding could extend further downstream past Hanwella.
Disaster management authorities have been alerted to initiate necessary precautionary measures, while residents and motorists navigating through these high risk areas are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution. (Newswire)
