Sri Lanka is expected to experience increased rainfall, particularly in the southwestern parts of the island, over the next few days as a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal intensifies into a cyclonic storm, the Department of Meteorology said.

In its weather forecast issued at 5:30 a.m. on Monday (October 26), the department said the deep depression over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the day.

The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and develop into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by Tuesday (October 27).

Although the weather system is not expected to directly affect Sri Lanka, the department warned that rainfall could increase across southwestern areas over the next few days due to associated wind patterns extending across the island.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are forecast in the Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western, Central and North-central provinces, as well as the Trincomalee district.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in some areas.

Strong winds of 40–50 kmph are also expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces, and the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

The Department of Meteorology urged the public to take necessary precautions against temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. (Newswire)
