Former National Youth Services Council (NYSC) Chairman and Director General Lalith Piyum Perera has been granted bail after being arrested by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on Wednesday (28).

Perera was arrested over allegations of causing a financial loss of Rs. 5.1 million to the government during his tenure at the NYSC.

According to investigators, Perera allegedly arranged lease agreements for a land and building in Samapura, Ampara, by falsely representing the property as government-owned.

The property was subsequently leased to the National Youth Services Council, resulting in an alleged unlawful payment of Rs. 3.8 million in NYSC funds to a third party.

Investigators further alleged that an additional Rs. 1.3 million was improperly spent on renovating the building without formal approval from the NYSC Board of Directors.

Perera was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court following his arrest and was subsequently granted bail.

Further investigations are underway. (Newswire)
