A specialised training programme has been launched for young people from Puttalam and Ampara, aimed at creating new employment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector.

According to the German Embassy in Sri Lanka, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, in partnership with DVV International Sri Lanka, has launched the first batch of the Longline Crew Member Training Programme at National Seafarers in Narahenpita, Colombo.

The programme combines practical training and simulation sessions conducted at the Southern Maritime Training Institute, providing participants with essential skills required to work in the longline fisheries industry.

The training also focuses on improving participants’ understanding of life at sea, including the responsibilities involved in working aboard fishing vessels.

The German Embassy stated that the initiative aims to equip young people with industry-relevant skills while creating new pathways to employment in Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector.

Further training batches are expected to be introduced as part of the programme, expanding opportunities for more young people to pursue careers in the industry. (Newswire)
