The Department of Meteorology has issued red alerts for severe lightning in three districts and amber alerts for 22 districts, warning of thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning in several parts of Sri Lanka.

According to the advisory issued at 11.30 a.m. today (29), the red alerts are in effect for Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts, while an amber advisory has been issued for the remaining 22 districts, including those in the Uva Province.

The Meteorology Department warned that temporary, localised strong winds may also occur during thundershowers.

The public has been advised to seek shelter indoors, avoid standing under trees and refrain from entering open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms.

People have also been urged to avoid using wired telephones, connected electrical appliances and open vehicles, including bicycles, tractors and boats.

The Department further advised the public to remain cautious of fallen trees and power lines and to contact local disaster management authorities in case of emergencies.
