The Gampaha High Court has sentenced a man to 54 years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping his daughter, who was under the age of 16.
According to Police, the verdict was delivered on Thursday (29), with the accused found guilty on all three charges filed against him.
The High Court imposed 18 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 50,000 for each charge, amounting to a total prison sentence of 54 years and fines of Rs. 150,000.
The court also ordered the convicted father to pay Rs. 200,000 in compensation to the victim.
Failure to pay the fines will result in an additional three years of imprisonment, while failure to pay the compensation will carry a further two-year prison sentence.
Police said the case was investigated by the Bureau for the Prevention and Investigation of Abuse of Children and Women, which arrested the suspect and initiated legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, Police revealed that the victim’s mother’s partner had previously been convicted by the Panadura High Court of raping the same girl and selling her for money.
In a verdict delivered on June 24, 2024, the Panadura High Court sentenced the man to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment on each of the two charges.
He was also fined Rs. 8,000 and ordered to pay the victim Rs. 500,000 in compensation.
The court further imposed additional prison terms in the event of non-payment of the fines and compensation.
