Three police officers attached to the Kobeigane Police Station have been suspended from duty in connection with the death of a suspect who was in police custody.

The suspended officers include two police sergeants and a constable.

The Police Media Division confirmed that the officers were suspended over allegations of negligence of duty.

The suspensions follow the death of a suspect at the Nikaweratiya Hospital on October 27, after being hospitalised while in police custody.

According to reports, the suspect, who was allegedly involved in several thefts, had been apprehended by villagers in the Beddegama area of Kobeigane and handed over to the Kobeigane Police.

The suspect subsequently died after being admitted to the Nikaweratiya Hospital.

Providing an update on the incident, Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler said that four villagers had been arrested in connection with assaulting the suspect during his capture.

He further said that an investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death. (Newswire)
