Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath has emphasised the responsibility of media organisations to combat misinformation, uphold truth and strengthen public trust in an era of rapid technological advancement.

Addressing the 63rd General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) at Cinnamon Life, City of Dreams, Colombo, on Sunday (1), the Minister said that while technology has made information more accessible, distinguishing between truth and falsehood has become increasingly difficult.

He stressed that broadcasting organisations have a responsibility to provide accurate information and promote greater public understanding.

Highlighting Sri Lanka’s diverse society, Minister Herath said the media plays an important role in encouraging dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence among communities.

He also emphasised that technological innovation should serve humanity and ensure wider access to knowledge.

“Peace cannot be sustained by diplomacy alone,” the Minister said, highlighting the importance of understanding among communities and the contribution of responsible broadcasting towards bringing societies closer together.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Colombo Mayor Vraîe Cally Balthazaar were also present at the event.

The five-day ABU General Assembly and Associated Meetings, hosted by MTV Sri Lanka, are being held from October 30 to November 3 under the theme “Media for Peace and Humanity: Truth, Trust, and Transformation.”

The gathering brings together broadcasters, media professionals and industry leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Established in 1964, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union represents broadcasting and media organisations across 66 countries, promoting regional cooperation, knowledge-sharing and professional development. (Newswire)
