Four Sri Lankan fishermen who went missing at sea after losing communication during Cyclone Arnab have been found safe approximately 200 nautical miles off the coast of Pottuvil, the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources announced.

The fishermen were aboard the multi-day fishing vessel IMUL-A-0022 TLE, which departed from the Kudawella Fisheries Harbour on October 21 for a four-day fishing trip.

According to the Ministry, the vessel encountered strong winds and rough seas associated with Cyclone Arnab, resulting in a complete loss of communication with the shore.

The four fishermen have been identified as W.P. Priyantha, P.B. Nimalsiri, L.Y. Naushka and K.H. Savindu, who is also the owner of the vessel.

Following reports that the vessel was missing, a coordinated search operation was launched involving the Sri Lanka Navy, Coast Guard and other fishing vessels operating in the area.

The Ministry confirmed that the missing vessel was located in deep waters approximately 200 nautical miles off Pottuvil, with all four fishermen found alive and in good health.

Arrangements are currently underway to bring the fishermen safely ashore, while medical examinations and first aid have also been organised.

The Ministry thanked the Navy, Coast Guard and fishing community for their assistance in the search operation.

It also urged fishermen to closely monitor weather warnings issued by the Department of Meteorology and Department of Fisheries and ensure that communication equipment is functioning properly before heading out to sea. (Newswire)
