The Colombo Electoral District has gained one parliamentary seat, while Badulla has lost one, according to the latest electoral district seat allocation announced by the Election Commission.
In a media release issued on November 3, the Commission said Colombo would be allocated 19 parliamentary seats, up from 18 at the 2024 General Election.
Badulla’s allocation has been reduced from nine seats to eight.
The allocations for the remaining 20 electoral districts remain unchanged compared with the 2024 parliamentary election.
According to the Election Commission, Sri Lanka has 17,534,397 registered electors under the 2026 Main Electoral Register and the first supplementary register.
Gampaha and Colombo have the highest parliamentary representation, with 19 seats each, followed by Kurunegala with 15, Kandy with 12, and Kalutara and Ratnapura with 11 each.
The Commission said the allocations were determined under Article 98(8) of the Constitution and published through Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2511/02 on October 19.
Under Sri Lanka’s electoral system, 196 MPs are elected from the country’s 22 electoral districts, while another 29 are appointed through the National List, bringing the total number of parliamentary seats to 225.
The revised allocation does not affect the composition of the current Parliament but will determine district representation at a future parliamentary election conducted under the applicable electoral register.
At the 2024 General Election, Colombo’s parliamentary allocation was reduced from 19 to 18 seats, while Gampaha and Kalutara each gained a seat. The latest allocation restores Colombo’s representation to 19 seats. (Newswire)
