An Indian tourist has been killed and two other people injured after two helicopters collided while attempting to land in Nepal’s Mount Everest region, authorities say.

The accident happened on Tuesday morning at the Pheriche helipad in Solukhumbu district, a popular stop for trekkers and mountaineers travelling towards Everest Base Camp.

The helicopters, operated by Fishtail Air and Air Dynasty, collided at around 8:11 a.m. local time, according to Nepalese police.

Officials said the helicopters’ rotor blades struck each other during landing, causing both aircraft to crash.

The tourist who died was travelling aboard the Fishtail Air helicopter. Nepalese media identified him as an Indian national named Vasanth Kumar.

A passenger from New Zealand and an Air Dynasty pilot, Captain Rabindra Prajapati, were also injured. They were evacuated to hospital in Kathmandu for treatment.

The Fishtail Air helicopter was being flown by Captain Prajjwal KC, while Captain Prajapati was commanding the Air Dynasty aircraft.

Emergency teams were deployed to the crash site, with helicopters assisting in rescue and evacuation operations.

Pheriche is a Himalayan settlement more than 4,000 metres above sea level, along the trekking route to Everest Base Camp.

Helicopters play an important role in transporting tourists, supplies and injured climbers in the remote region, where road access is limited or unavailable.

The accident occurred during Nepal’s busy autumn trekking season, when thousands of visitors travel to the Everest region.

Nepal’s aviation authorities have launched an investigation into the collision.

The exact circumstances leading to the accident remain under investigation. (Newswire)
