Veterinary officers at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home have commenced treatment for an injured wild elephant brought from the Kalthota area, the Department of Wildlife Conservation said.

The 18-year-old male elephant, which was found suffering from an injury in the Kandiyapitawawa area of Kalthota, was transferred to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home for further medical care.

According to Chief Veterinary Officer Malaka Abeywardena, the elephant has sustained an injury to a bone in one of its legs, making it difficult for the animal to walk.

As a result, the elephant has been unable to obtain sufficient food, leading to malnutrition.

Veterinary examinations have also revealed that the elephant is suffering from a parasitic infection.

The Department further stated that the elephant is currently receiving continuous veterinary treatment at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home. (Newswire)
