The Democratic Party is projected to regain control of both chambers of the United States Congress following the midterm elections, delivering a major political setback to President Donald Trump.

According to CNN, Democrats are projected to win majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, ending Republican control of Congress.

The results will give Democrats significant power to challenge Trump’s legislative agenda and scrutinise his administration during the final two years of his presidency.

The election outcome is a major shift in Washington’s political balance, with Democrats gaining control of congressional committees and the ability to launch investigations into the administration.

Control of the Senate will also allow Democrats to influence the confirmation of presidential appointments, including federal judges and senior administration officials.

The results come amid voter concerns over the cost of living, inflation and the direction of the country, issues that featured prominently during the election campaign.

Reacting to the Republican setbacks, Trump claimed his party would have performed better had he been a candidate.

“I wasn’t on the ballot and if I was, we would have won in a landslide!” Trump wrote on social media.

Despite the projected Democratic takeover of Congress, Trump will retain his presidential veto powers and executive authority.

The new balance of power is expected to significantly affect his administration’s ability to advance key policies during the remainder of his term. (Newswire)
