A Sri Lankan social media user has warned the public about telephone scams after claiming that his 70-year-old father lost Rs. 4.6 million to fraudsters posing as bank representatives.

In a social media post, Dr. Amila Fernando said his father received a telephone call from an individual claiming to be handling a tax calculation on behalf of a private bank.

The caller allegedly requested banking details and one-time passwords (OTPs), which his father provided without realising it was a scam.

According to Fernando, the incident resulted in the loss of Rs. 4.6 million from his father’s account.

He further claimed that a bank official had informed him of two other similar incidents during the same week.

Fernando urged the public, particularly elderly citizens, to remain vigilant against fraudsters impersonating bank officials or government institutions.

He reminded the public that banks, the Inland Revenue Department and other government institutions do not request OTPs, PINs or banking passwords over the telephone.

The public is advised to immediately disconnect suspicious calls and contact their bank directly through official telephone numbers to verify any requests. (Newswire)
