Lawyers for Democracy (LfD) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of senior lawyer Lal Wijenayake, recognising his longstanding contributions to democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Sri Lanka.

In a statement issued on November 2, the organisation described Wijenayake, a senior member of the Bar practising in Kandy and one of its Convenors, as a strong advocate of democratic values who consistently opposed authoritarianism.

The organisation highlighted his uncompromising opposition to the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, despite being a member of the policy-making body of the current ruling administration, as a reflection of his political independence.

LfD recalled that Wijenayake was among its founding members when the organisation was established in July 2012, following an attack on the Mannar Magistrate’s Court.

According to the statement, he played a leading role in mobilising legal professionals, trade unions, civil society organisations and other groups to defend judicial independence and the rule of law.

The organisation also highlighted his involvement in campaigns against the impeachment of former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake in January 2013.

It said Wijenayake, alongside other members of Lawyers for Democracy and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, helped organise demonstrations, meetings and public awareness programmes that contributed to efforts to restore judicial independence.

LfD further recognised his commitment to civil liberties, equal treatment, ethnic harmony and reconciliation.

The organisation said his leadership, guidance and dedication to democratic principles had been instrumental in its activities since its establishment.

Lawyers for Democracy stated that Wijenayake’s contributions to Sri Lankan society and the legal profession would be remembered for generations. (Newswire)
