The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has introduced a new QR code-based food safety complaint system, allowing the public to report concerns about restaurants and food establishments directly to health authorities.
Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar announced that the new system was launched by the CMC’s Public Health Department, beginning in Wellawatte and extending to the Majestic City Food Court.
Under the new system, members of the public can scan a QR code, complete a short form and submit complaints, which will be forwarded directly to Medical Officers of Health (MOHs) and Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) for investigation and necessary action.
The Mayor said the system also allows individuals to submit complaints anonymously, ensuring that their privacy is protected.
She advised customers reporting concerns about purchased food to retain both the food item and the receipt, instead of returning the food to the restaurant, as these may be required as evidence during investigations.
The public can also contact the CMC Public Health Department through the telephone number 011 267 6161 or email cmchealthcomplaints@gmail.com.
Mayor Balthazaar said the initiative is expected to be expanded across Colombo 1 to 15, with the aim of improving food safety standards and encouraging greater public participation in maintaining hygiene at food establishments.
She emphasised that the new system would make it easier for residents to raise food safety concerns and ensure that complaints reach the relevant authorities for action. (Newswire)
