The National System Operator (NSO) has reversed its earlier position on electricity tariffs, announcing that it will no longer seek an increase for the final quarter of 2026, citing improved reservoir storage levels and favourable rainfall forecasts.

The announcement comes after the NSO initially requested a 2.88% electricity tariff increase for the October–December period, citing a projected revenue shortfall of Rs. 4.4 billion.

Following a preliminary review, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) had reduced the proposed increase to 1.46%, with public consultations held on Thursday (5).

However, in a statement issued following the stakeholder consultation, NSO (Pvt) Ltd said it would no longer request an increase in electricity tariffs for the final three months of the year.

The company said its revised position was based on prevailing reservoir storage levels and forecasts of above-normal rainfall under the current El Niño conditions.

Improved reservoir storage could support increased hydropower generation, potentially reducing the need for more expensive thermal power generation. (Newswire)
