Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith says the Catholic Church is currently studying the government’s proposed anti-terrorism legislation to identify any shortcomings or concerns.

Speaking to the media, Cardinal Ranjith said the proposed legislation, which is intended to replace the existing Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), is being examined with the assistance of legal experts.

“The government has now presented the proposed legislation to society, and we are currently studying it,” he said.

Cardinal Ranjith said lawyers were examining the provisions of the proposed law to determine whether there were any shortcomings that needed to be addressed.

“We are looking into the proposed legislation through our lawyers to see whether there are any shortcomings. That is what we are doing at present,” he added.

Meanwhile, commenting on the country’s education system, Cardinal Ranjith emphasised that education should go beyond textbooks and classroom learning to focus on character development and preparing children for life’s challenges.

He said the fundamental purpose of education should be to help individuals become better human beings while developing the courage and strength to face difficulties in life.

“A complete education is not merely what children learn from books. It should also provide them with the inner strength they need in life,” he said.

Cardinal Ranjith stressed that schools should help children develop good character, make responsible decisions and build the confidence needed to face challenges in society.

He added that education should encourage children to develop the strength to overcome problems they may encounter throughout their lives. (Newswire)
