Badulla District Parliamentarian and former State Minister Chamara Sampath Dassanayake has been further remanded until November 10 in connection with an alleged Rs. 8.4 million bribery case.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (06) also ordered that his former private secretary be further remanded until the same date.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued the order after considering submissions made by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and the lawyers representing the suspects.

The case relates to allegations that Dassanayake solicited and accepted Rs. 8.4 million in bribes from three companies involved in importing phosphate.

The Bribery Commission informed the court that Dassanayake allegedly accepted bribes to issue phosphate import licences to the three companies without following the proper procedures.

The alleged offences are said to have occurred during his tenure as State Minister of Primary Industries, from September 08, 2022, to September 23, 2024.

Dassanayake and his former private secretary were previously arrested by the Bribery Commission in connection with the allegations and placed in remand custody. (Newswire)
