The government is working on legislation to abolish Sri Lanka’s manpower employment system and ensure greater job security for workers, Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe has said.
Addressing a trade union gathering attended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Minister said discussions were underway through the National Labour Advisory Council on introducing the necessary legal provisions.
Samarasinghe said the government did not support a system in which intermediaries were paid for supplying workers who directly provided their labour to companies and institutions.
He said trade unions had long campaigned for the abolition of the manpower employment system and the permanent absorption of workers into the workforce.
The Minister said discussions involving labour representatives and government officials were focused on developing a legal framework to address the issue.
He added that the proposed changes were part of broader labour law reforms aimed at strengthening workers’ rights and employment security.
However, he did not announce a specific timeline for introducing the legislation. (Newswire)
