Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya has written to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), requesting an immediate and appropriate investigation into Gampaha Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne.
In a letter dated Oct. 26, 2026, and addressed to JSC Secretary Prasanna Alwis, the IGP called for an investigation into matters concerning the magistrate.
Gunaratne, who had previously sought the initiation of contempt of court proceedings against the IGP, was transferred to the Judges’ Training Institute with immediate effect yesterday.
According to reports, the transfer letter was issued by JSC Secretary Prasanna Alwis.
The magistrate had earlier requested the president of the Court of Appeal to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the IGP over the alleged failure to comply with a court order.
The order required the IGP to issue a circular directing all police officers not to initiate baseless legal proceedings against innocent citizens.
The magistrate had reportedly determined that the failure to comply with the order undermined the authority of the court.
Reports further indicate that the magistrate submitted his observations before the transfer was announced.
The JSC has not officially disclosed the reason for the transfer. (Newswire)
